Mainstream Politicians In Europe See Hope In Downfall Of Austria’s Far Right

Austrian Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache has resigned after video emerged showing him discussing fixing state contracts in return for financial and political favors. Strache is a member of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party, which has been part of Austria’s ruling coalition since 2017. Reuters reports Strache’s resignation gave politicians from Europe’s mainstream parties an opportunity to call on voters to stand against the far right. Leaders across the continent made it clear that they hoped Strache’s downfall would have an impact far beyond Austria in the upcoming vote for the European Parliament.
